Why
Use This Pocket Guide? Asia has the fastest growing economies in the world today. All indications are that this stunning growth will continue into the next decade. But along with this remarkable growth has come a rise in environmental degradation. The challenges facing these nations will require innovative government and private sector strategies that increase resource efficiency and lessen pollution intensity of industrial production. U.S. and multinational firms have much to offer the region. New technologies and techniques exist that reduce environmental stress while raising economic productivity. Emerging revolutions in advanced materials and biotechnology, along with spectacular strides in information technologies and miniaturization, provide radically new products and process technologies that harmonize environmental and economic objectives. These current best practices need to be diffused more rapidly and the products disseminated into the Asian marketplace. How to Use This Pocket GuideThe United States-Asia Environmental Partnership (US-AEP) is a pioneering program that helps match U.S. environmental experience, technology, and practice to the needs in Asia. Through the efforts of 25 government departments and agencies, numerous businesses, and nongovernmental organizations, US-AEP promotes U.S. commercial participation in the region's rapidly expanding markets. As a service to U.S. executives, US-AEP produced this directory of programs and organizations that support environmental activities in the Asia/Pacific region. The overview contains general background information on each of the major U.S., state, and multilateral organizations. The more detailed subsequent sections are organized by agency or department and include key programs of each organization, types of assistance, cost of service, contact information, and, if available, Home Page sites. The guide also provides a list of contacts for key nongovernmental organizations, relevant associations, U.S. embassies in the region, and Asia/Pacific embassies in the United States. To locate the appropriate information, turn to the Agency/Service Locator on the inside front cover of the guide or to the Table of Contents. Please note that all US-AEP programs are specially designed to support the export of U.S. environmental goods and services. |
