Former Students Sue School District over Asbestos Exposure
Dozens of former Merced County Office of Education students are suing their school district over allegations that they were exposed to cancer-causing asbestos during a job-training program.
According to the attorney representing the former students, they renovated asbestos-containing buildings without adequate protection. The incident took place nearly a decade back. The buildings were located at a very old military base, the attorney said.
Earlier, three individuals who carried out the program through a nonprofit had been sent to jail after they were found guilty in a separate case.
The lawyer representing the students said the school district owes his clients lifelong coverage for medical checkups, in addition to compensation payment for the fear of contracting cancer.
An attorney representing the Merced County Office of Education said the students have access to medical care through workers’ compensation.
