AG Sues Demolition Company over Shoddy Asbestos Work at Technical High School

Students and staff members at the Greater Lowell Technical HS could have been exposed to asbestos because of the shoddy renovation and demolition work by RM Technologies Incorporated, a suit filed by United States Attorney General says.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura T Healey filed the suit against the Lawrence-based company in Suffolk County Superior Court. The complaint says the defendant failed to properly contain the work areas during the asbestos work in 2014. The work allowed waste material containing dry asbestos uncontained in several areas all through the school, according to the suit. Additionally, the company failed to properly clean up asbestos-containing debris after performing the work, the AG alleges.

Asbestos is present in numerous homes, schools and workplaces, Healey said. She said it poses severe health risk if it’s not handled properly. Too often, workers, children and families are exposed to the hazardous carcinogen because of unlicensed or shoddy work and most of them are not aware of the hazard it poses, Healey said.

Pursuing this lawsuit is part of the new initiative declared recently by the Attorney General’s office. Chloe Gotsis, the spokeswoman representing the AG, said this issue came to her office in 2015 through an alleged asbestos exposure victim.

According to Boutin, the renovation of the school was handled by Consigli Construction Company Incorporated which hired RM Technologies for the asbestos abatement task.

The main project included the removal of some asbestos-containing wall panels embedded within the solid panels.

Rafael Guzman, the owner and president of RM Technologies Incorporated, did not return emails and calls seeking comment. Cheryl Ann Bomal, the president of the Greater Lowell Teachers Organization, and John Taylor, the Vice President, did not respond to the message seeking comments on the issue.

Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos exposure may lead to catastrophic diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, pleural plaques and asbestosis. Of these, the deadliest disease is mesothelioma, a cancer of the protective membrane that lines the cavities of various internal body organs. Though it takes a few decades to manifest, mesothelioma often kills its victims within 10-12 months following the diagnosis.

Mesothelioma Law Firms

The hazards associated with exposure to asbestos have been known to the companies that manufactured and used asbestos-containing products for decades. The victims of asbestos exposure are often entitled to considerable compensation because the undue hardships for them and their families could’ve been avoided had they been warned of those hazards. The help of reputable mesothelioma law firms is vital for the victims for the successful completion of the case.

If you think that you or a family member has developed mesothelioma due to the negligence of someone else, you can claim compensation for the physical and emotional sufferings caused by the disease and for the expenses related to the medical treatment. As the litigation process is complex, you are advised to hire a mesothelioma law firm with sufficient resources and a proven track record of success.
